Elderly and Lost

Emerald

Aaliyah and Emerald Staff

One of our elderly shared branching members came in with only 6 minutes until closing time on Friday evening. Typically he spends a good amount of time at the teller island filling out his deposit slip but on this night he came directly to Mckensey’s teller window. She asked how she could help him and knew immediately something felt off. He said he thought he was here to withdraw some money but he couldn’t remember what he needed the money for. He was fairly quiet and his eyes looked lost. He said he wasn’t going to do any banking today and he would come back another time. He left the branch. As we were all walking to our cars to go home we noticed him walking down the sidewalk. This shared branching member is 90 years old. He was carrying a sack with something in it but we couldn’t identify what it was.
Aaliyah didn’t feel right about letting him walk by himself so she stopped him down the road and asked him if she could give him a ride home. He was hesitant but he took her up on the offer. Once he was in the car with her she started conversation with him. She asked him if he remembered how he ended up at the credit union. He told her he was at IHOP with his brother. He got up to use the restroom and when he came back his brother was gone. He waited in IHOP for his brother to come back for over an hour. Once he realized his brother wasn’t coming back he decided he would have to walk home. His pancakes were in the bag he was carrying around. He started walking down Emerald and was supposed to turn onto Milwaukee but disoriented and kept going straight down Emerald. He recognized Connections as a place that he frequents and thought that’s where he was on his way to.
Don lives on Milwaukee and Ustick which is not close when you are on foot. When she got him to his house his brother who is also elderly was outside. As it turns out when Don got up to go to the bathroom his brother had forgotten that they were there together and left! Don was extremely grateful to Aaliyah for the ride home. He’s been in the branch since that day and has thanked her over and over.
